10 Essential Fall Prevention Tips to Keep Your Senior Loved Ones Safe and Independent
The Importance of Fall Prevention for Seniors
When it comes to falls, the odds are stacked against our aging loved ones.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every four seniors will fall this year – it’s the number one cause of injuries among people age 65 and older,” said Sierra Goetz, co-founder and operations manager at the HomeCare Advocacy Network (HCAN). “Of course, falls often result in injuries, like broken hips, but they can also cause a senior to become fearful or depressed – making it difficult for them to maintain their independence.”
September 23 – 27 is National Fall Prevention Awareness Week, so we’re joining with other organizations to share practical tips to reduce the risk of falls. Goetz says there are 10 simple things you can do to help keep your aging loved ones on their feet.
Tip 1: Examine Every Room and Hallway for Hazards
(Look for things like loose carpet or wood floorboards that stick up and then repair or remove potential hazards.)
Tip 2: Keep the Home Tidy and Free of Clutter
(Ensure walkways are clear of stacks of newspapers, magazines, or other clutter.)
Tip 3: Remove Throw Rugs to Prevent Tripping
(Explain how throw rugs can cause trips and should be removed for safety.)
Tip 4: Install Handrails and Grab Bars
(Add sturdy handrails along stairs and grab bars in bathrooms to prevent falls.)
Tip 5: Secure Mats in Tubs and Showers
(Prevent slips by using non-slip mats on slippery surfaces like the bathtub or shower.)
Tip 6: Improve Lighting Throughout the Home
(Use brighter bulbs and nightlights to help seniors navigate dark hallways and rooms.)
Tip 7: Review Medications That May Cause Dizziness
(Discuss the importance of medication review to avoid balance issues.)
Tip 8: Consider One-Level Living for Convenience
(If possible, encourage living on one level to reduce the need for stair navigation.)
Tip 9: Ensure Shoes and Socks Are Non-Slip
(Promote the use of non-slip footwear for better balance and stability.)
Tip 10: Encourage Regular Physical Activity
(Suggest exercises like Tai Chi to strengthen legs and improve balance.)
Maintaining Senior Independence Through Safety
“Eventually, your senior may need a cane or walker to help steady themselves or maybe event a little extra help at home,” Goetz said. “Our caregivers are always on the lookout for potential trip and fall hazards. They are also trained to assist seniors who may have mobility issues – reducing their risk of falls and helping them remain healthy and independent for as long as possible.”
